Action Research Project - Double Blocking Algebra 1 Classes

I like the idea of double-blocking Math for students that need it and your plan looks very thorough. My campus is doing something similar for the English Writing STAAR. Students who need extra assistance are being placed in a "Creative Writing" class. I love that it has a positive spin on the name, so that would be my encouragement to you; put a positive spin on it for these kids that are having to go though double the math :) All the best to you in your Action Research!
ReplyDeleteDouble-blocking in algebra is a great idea for at risk kids. A solid foundation in algebra prepares them for the rest of the math classes they will need to take. Can you really put a cost analysis on something that far reaching? It looks like this is something that is already in place and you are just evaluating the impact to see if it should continue, right? I would love to see what your results show.
ReplyDeleteThe cost analysis will be hard. I will be helped out quite a bit with that by my site supervisor who is our associate principal. He is the "numbers and data" guy at our school. It basically would be trying to see if just doing tutorials would make more sense.
DeleteI teach Physics and the student's math skills are my biggest challenge.
Fellow Physics teacher commiserates. Students who cannot isolate a variable are "beaten up" pretty hard in physics for basically the first semester and half of the second. Having taught previously on a block schedule, where all freshmen were basically given double block Math and English, we saw test scores shoot through the roof. I really look forward to reading your final results. Good luck!
DeleteI like your research plan. I know having more time in Algebra would have been helpful to me as a student. I look forward to reading more about your project.
ReplyDeleteI am elementary, what is blocking? Otherwise looks great!
ReplyDeleteDouble blocking would be making a single class period into two. For example we have 7 periods/day. A regular algebra class would meet 1 period each day every day of the year, as does every other class. The double block algebra classes meet every day for two straight periods (ie. 1&2 period) every day for the whole year.
DeleteDouble blocking is so helpful to help students gain the skills necessary to be successful. I am curious if you are looking at last year's data of students who were double blocked? I am curious to know what the data shows, because I have seen double blocks on several campuses with varying levels of success.
